The State Centre of Excellence (SCoE-SAM) was established in October 2019 at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi. Our core mandate is to provide technical assistance and support to the Department of Health and the Department of Women and Child Development towards strengthening comprehensive care for children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) at both community and facility levels.
Our mandate includes conducting research, policy review and providing program support for strengthening the quality of nutrition services across the state of Jharkhand.
We work in collaboration with NHM Jharkhand, State Nutrition Mission and ICDS with technical support from UNICEF.
Focusing on both Community-Based Management (CMAM) and Facility-Based Management (F-SAM).
Our work is a collaborative effort between state departments and international organizations.

The State Centre of Excellence (SCoE) at RIMS, Ranchi plays a pivotal role in strengthening the nutrition ecosystem in Jharkhand. As a technical resource partner to the Department of Health, Medical Education & Family Welfare and the Department of Women & Child Development (DWCD), SCoE-SAM ensures that the management of Severe Acute Malnutrition is evidence-based and standardized across all districts.
Assisting the State in developing operational guidelines, protocols and financial norms for SAM management.
Developing training modules and conducting state/district level training for MOs, ANMs and Frontline workers.
Regular monitoring of MTCs and CMAM sites to ensure quality of care and adherence to C2IQ standards.
Conducting evidence-based research to identify gaps and test innovative models in SAM management.
SCoE-SAM functions as the central node connecting the National Centre of Excellence (NCoE) with the 100+ Malnutrition Treatment Centres (MTCs) across Jharkhand.

The management of Severe Acute Malnutrition in Jharkhand follows the Integrated Management of SAM (IM-SAM) approach. This strategy ensures that children are identified early at the community level and provided with a continuum of care that moves seamlessly between health facilities and their homes.
